LINCOLN – Nebraska Sports Director Bill Moos said he enjoyed the integrity and passion of Tim Miles, but that he just had not won enough.
And that's why Moos dismissed Miles Tuesday afternoon, said the general manager.
"I love his passion, his energy, his charisma, his integrity, but in the end, I did not think we competed as I wish for our programs at the Big Ten conference," said Moos.
So, Nebraska will be looking for a new head coach.
Moos said he thought the coaching search would take a week or two.

There have been many rumors that Nebraska has an agreement with Fred Hoiberg, former coach of Iowa State. But Moos said he was not close to hiring someone, and he would be surprised if coaching research took less than seven days.
"I am not a young puppy standing here, and I would be the first to admit it," Moos said. "I have a network and connections, and these have already been put to good use."
Asked specifically about Hoiberg, Moos replied that he had gone to him to gauge his interest. He is not sure of Hoiberg's interest in this work.
Moos said he had contacted two other coaches but had not identified them.
"We will start looking for our new coach, I do not know how long it will take," said Moos. "I think we can attract the best coaches from the University of Nebraska with what we have."
Fred Hoiberg, former head coach of the Chicago Bulls and Iowa State
Current salary: $ 5 million
Hoiberg is at the top of the list of top coaches. He restored the power status of Iowa State as Big 12 and left for the NBA in 2015. He was 115-56 years old at ISU with four nominations for the NCAA Tournament. He spent three full seasons in Chicago before being fired from 24 games this year with a record of 115-155. Hoiberg was born in Lincoln, his grandfather was a coach at the NU and his niece is currently basketball director there. So there are links. But he clearly expressed his lack of interest in recruiting and his salary of $ 5 million. So, Nebraska should pay and convince Hoiberg that recruiting in Lincoln is not a gigantic task.
Tyronn Lue, former head coach of Cleveland Cavaliers
Current salary: $ 7 million
He has no experience as a college basketball coach, has not been praised by the Nebraska Sports Department since his departure for the NBA in 1998 and currently receives $ 7 million for not coaching. He has 11 regular season titles to his credit, with nine conference tournament championships, 14 NCAA tournaments and 11 dance wins. Five of these came on the 2013 WSU race at the final four. Marshall was in serious talks with Nebraska in 2012, but suddenly retreated. Since then, Wichita State has joined the American Athletics Conference. This year, the Shockers are just above .500. If the time had come to deflate with WSU, it might be now, and that could be his big chance for a Power Five job. However, he has a $ 3.57 million contract, so UN should pay.
Ben Howland, Head Coach of the State of Mississippi
Current salary: $ 2.2 million
Howland was fired from UCLA in 2013 after the Bruins' win over the Pac-12. He made three Final Fours at UCLA and was a finalist in 2006. Previously, he had driven Pittsburgh to two Sweet 16. Mike Anderson, head coach of Arkansas
Current salary: $ 2.55 million
Anderson is in his eighth year in Arkansas, but he has already quit his programs abruptly. After eight years, could he have the virus again? Aged 59, UAB has qualified for the Sweet 16 in 2004. In Missouri, between 2006 and 2011, Anderson won 111 games, then the Tigers at Elite Eight rank in 2009 and shared a Big 12 title with the Kansas. In Arkansas, Anderson brought the Razorback to three NCAA tournaments. In total, Anderson is 0.649 and is one of four active head coaches with 15 or more years of training without a losing season.
Thad Matta, former head coach of the Ohio State
Matta has agreed with the Ohio State to leave his position as head coach in 2017 after 13 seasons. During this period, Matta was among the best of the Big Ten, winning the conference five times. He took Ohio State to two Final Fours, in 2007 and 2012, and was three times best coach of the year. Matta resigned for health problems, but last year he was interviewed for the post in Georgia, which was eventually entrusted to Tom Crean. Matta is 51 and has won 439 games as a head coach. Maybe he's not finished and maybe he wants another shot at the Big Ten.
Jerrance Howard, Kansas Assistant

The Big Ten is also the league of the great, and it is his specialty. He helped develop Andrew Wiggins and Joel Embiid. He played for Self at Illinois and won three Big Ten titles. He also knows the Big Ten. He is 38 years old and is ready for a head coaching position.
Mark Turgeon, Maryland Head Coach
Current salary: $ 2.85 million

Kelvin Sampson, Houston head coach
Current salary: $ 1.4 million
Sampson has a long list of controversies in two schools. He was chased from both Oklahoma and Indiana during complicated warrants involving NCAA violations primarily related to recruitment. In 2008, Sampson resigned from IU with a five-year sentence to prove his cause. When it was over, Houston hired Sampson. In his fifth season, he has ranked the Cougars in the top 10. Sampson is .660 with 15 appearances in NCAA tournaments and 13 wins, plus a race to the Final Four. It can lead. But would Nebraska want the baggage?
Eric Musselman, Nevada Head Coach

Everyone will want to hire Musselman this summer. The 54-year-old has Nevada rolling. Craig Smith, head coach of Utah State

Smith was with Miles in the states of Mayville, North Dakota, Colorado, and Nebraska. Steve Wojciechowski, Marquette's head coach

The former duke guard is a 42-year-old head coach with nearly 100 wins in five seasons at Marquette. He has not yet won a tournament in the NCAA, but he is one of the best young coaches in the game. Woj was Duke's assistant from 1999 to 2014, helping Duke win two titles in 2001 and 2010. Nebraska could easily double his $ 1.2 million salary at Marquette.
Johnny Dawkins, UCF Head Coach

He did, however, win three conference titles and 167 games. Pastner is in his third season at Georgia Tech and remains one of the best young coaches in the country, especially given his rare experience despite his 41 years.
Porter Moser, Loyola-Chicago Head Coach
Former Creighton Bluejay, Moser coached Loyola-Chicago (11) at the Final Four last season. Aged 50, he earns his living by working in large schools such as Arkansas-Little Rock, Illinois and now Loyola-Chicago. Moser signed a contract extension after last season, but this season did not go as planned, finishing 20-13 with a loss to Bradley in the Missouri Valley semifinal. If he wants to live from this Final Four race, it's time to do it.
TJ Otzelberger, Head Coach of the State of South Dakota
If you want a disciple of Fred Hoiberg, Otzelberger is your man. He was one of the leading recruiters of these Hoiberg teams in the mid-2000s. Now South Dakota's head coach, he has previously competed in two NCAA tournaments in three years and has won two conference titles. And it is 41 with connections in the Midwest.
Saddi Washington, Michigan assistant
Washington is also ready for a post of head coach after 15 years in the sector. He spent his last three years with John Beilein in Michigan. Washington coaches the big men, helped turn Mortiz Wagner into a pick for the NBA draft and is the Wolverines' leading scout. Washington spent 10 years at the University of Oakland, but helped make Michigan what it is today. It may be however that he is heading first to work at mid-major.
Kevin Ollie
At one point, Ollie was considered one of the best coaches in the country. In his second season at UConn, Ollie led the Huskies to a national title and a 32-8 record. Longtime assistant to Jim Calhoun, Ollie has taken over the 2012-13 season. He was fired after the 2017-18 season for a reason attributable to the NCAA breaches of recruitment. But UConn was also 14-18 this season. True, it has flamed up, but if Ollie wants to get back into the game, Nebraska could appeal to someone who has already won in the NCAA tournament – and NU could probably get it for less than other possibilities from Nebraska.
Tony Stubblefield, Assistant to Oregon
A UN graduate and Altman assistant, he has been a UN assistant for three years and has been an assistant throughout the chain of coaches.
