Nebraska beat No. 3 Oklahoma on the road to Memorial Stadium in Norman, but narrowly failed in a 23-16 loss to the Sooners in the Big Reds battle on Saturday.
The Huskers (2-2) held off a powerful Oklahoma offense for most of the day, limiting the Sooners to 408 yards of total attack, including 214 in the air. Nebraska nearly matched OR yard-for-yard, handling 384 yards overall, including 289 in the air. The two teams also faced each other yard-for-yard in penalties (70) and were within a minute of each other in possession time, as the Sooners held a slight 30:50 advantage for the match.
Oklahoma (3-0), who entered the game as a favorite with more than three touchdowns, survived by converting three drives to touchdowns and adding a two-point defensive conversion after an extra point attempt blocked at Nebraska at the end of the third quarter. The Huskers were able to respond with two touchdowns and a career 51-yard field goal from Connor culp. Trailing with a touchdown, Nebraska recovered the ball with just under a minute to go, but couldn’t move across the field without any downtime.
Nebraska had other chances in the game, missing a pair of baskets (35, 51) and the extra point blocked, while the Sooners also missed a long basket (54).
The Nebraska Blackshirts kept the Huskers on the road with outstanding performances against a dominant OU offensive line and an earlier attack loaded with talent. Jojo domann led the Huskers with 12 tackles and one pass break, while Deontai Williams added nine saves and a rushed quarterback. Luc Reimer, Nick henrich and Quinton Newsome all added seven tackles while Garret nelson launched in six stops and Ben stille five.
Spencer Rattler covered the Sooners for 75 yards in 14 plays in just under seven minutes to open the game. Rattler capped the drive on a five-yard dive OR a 7-0 lead. Nebraska responded with Culp’s 51-yard field goal after a 14-play practice to make it 7-3 at the end of the first quarter. The Huskers overcame five penalties to score points on the board on their first down and were only flagged for three penalties the rest of the game.
Both teams kept off the board in the second quarter, trading failed field goal attempts of more than 50 yards during the quarter.
Nebraska started the second half with the ball and advanced to the field goal before the drive stopped in the red zone. The Huskers attempted a 35-yard field goal that went wide to the left.
The Sooners then set up another long haul, covering 80 yards in 10 plays on a walk that lasted 5:29 and was capped by Rattler’s one-yard touchdown pass at Jeremiah Hall to take a lead of 14-3 with 3:50 left in the third quarter. Rattler finished 24 of 34 for 214 yards and a touchdown in the air.
But Nebraska responded with eight seconds left in the third on that of Adrian Martinez a four-yard touchdown run to top off a nine-play, 75-yard practice to cut the margin to 14-9. But NU’s extra point try was blocked and picked up on the run by Patrick Fields who sent him back 100 yards to give the Sooners a 16-9 lead heading into the fourth quarter.
Oklahoma strengthened their grip on the win on a 12-play, 65-yard practice that culminated in a two-yard touchdown by Kennedy Brooks that gave the Sooners a 23-9 lead with 10:24 left. Brooks finished with 75 rushing yards, while Eric Gray led the OU with 84 yards on 15 carries.
Martinez and the Huskers quickly moved closer to striking distance before their practice came to a halt. On the 4th and 17th at OU 24, Martinez kicked off his only interception of the day with a spectacular one-handed interception from DJ Graham at the OU’s 3-yard line. The Sooners celebrated as if they had secured the win with 8:16 remaining, when in fact the interception cost the Sooners 21 yards from field position and put the Husker defense in position to attack. .
Rattler and the Sooners went nowhere on a quick three-and-out and after a low Michael Turk punt and a quick 10-yard return by Samori Toure, the Huskers were 1st and 10 at OU 38 with 6:40 remaining.
The Huskers then produced the fastest hit of the game for either team, as Martinez hit the tight end Austin allen for a seven-yard gain before rushing for a quick 10-yard to put NU 1st and 10 at OU 21. Martinez then found Omar Manning streak down the middle of the end zone for a touchdown to reduce the OU’s lead to 23-16 after Culp’s extra point.
Martinez finished 19 of 25 for 289 yards and one touchdown in the air in the game, but was sacked five times by the Sooners. He still managed 34 rushing yards, while Rahmir johnson led the Huskers on the ground with 42 yards on 11 carries. Allen led the Huskers with six receptions (43 yards) that day, while Zavier Betts added three catches for 61 yards. Manning finished with two receptions for 52 yards and one score.
After Nebraska touchdown, Oklahoma played a low, catchy kick poorly Brendan Franke, as Marvin Mims recovered the ball at OU 8 and dived out of bounds. But the Sooners had a three first downs to cross Nebraska territory and chew for more than four minutes before the Blackshirts forced a punt on the 4th and 5th at NU 48.
The Huskers took over with 57 seconds left and no time outs and couldn’t start anything on the disc before Martinez’s final completion for 14 yards on the 4th and 16th ended the game.
Nebraska is back on the road to the Big Ten Conference next week when the Huskers travel to undefeated Michigan. The Spartans improved to 3-0 with a 38-17 victory at No.24 Miami on Saturday.
