NASHVILLE (WSMV) – A huge landslide has blocked the eastbound lanes of Interstate 24 north of Nashville around kilometer marker 42.
TDOT is bringing in two teams of geologists and ecologists to review the site over the next few days. There may be explosions to look into the rock wall.
Those attempting to travel to Nashville are redirected to Exit 40 (Old Hickory Boulevard exit), then Interstate 65 to the city.
The landslide occurred around 22 hours. Saturday. According to TDOT, repairs to the roadway could take at least a week.
News4 has maintained with Michael Cothern, who has a house on top of the hill and uses the other part of the property for hunting. He said he received a phone call, and then saw him on the news before going out to watch him himself.
"I looked at the top of the hill and I said, I know it's part of my property there and that it's here on the highway. C & # 39; That's when I got a call from TDOT people, "said Michael Cothern.
Teams plan to bring equipment to repel everything. From there, they will bring heavy rocks to support it and transport the rest of the highway.
The repairs mean longer journeys for drivers like Kathryn Kniery, who works in the city center.
"It means 30 minutes more, instead of 5:30, it's 5 in the morning and a lot of coffee and maybe a Red Bull," Kniery said.
Kniery was returning home to Ashland City on Saturday night, as she was returning home. She remembers a dozen drivers trying to find a solution.
"I was not so far away, I did not see it coming in. I came in. I saw it when I got in. I'm flabbergasted," said Kniery.
Phil Dier is another pilot already in preparation. He had the feeling that it could happen with all the rain.
"It makes sense that everything will collapse at some point," Dier said.
He takes his son to school in East Nashville. This means that he will have to get up a little earlier to arrive on time.
"We're going to get back on the road as long as it takes, I suppose," said Dier.
