The accident occurred Thursday night in Interstate 70 in the Denver area, according to the Lakewood Police Department. He tweeted that there were "several" dead, but did not provide the number of people killed, indicating that the authorities were working to extinguish the fire and associate the victims with their vehicles.

The priority now is to extinguish the fire and identify who was in each car, police said. At least six people were transported to hospitals.

The accident began when a high-speed semitrailer on the east side of the road collided with other vehicles, triggering a chain reaction and fire, said Lakewood Police agent Ty Countryman at KDVR , a subsidiary of CNN.

Traffic in the eastbound direction of I-70 was at a standstill as there had been another crash further down the highway, police said at a press conference . Authorities said the vehicle crashed into traffic jams after the accident.

The video of the scene showed firefighters spraying water on huge orange flames and cars on fire.

"This seems to be one of the worst accidents we have had in Lakewood," Countryman said.

The Denver West Parkway Bridge on I-70 was seriously damaged by the fire, authorities said. Both directions of the I-70 are closed overnight at the scene of the fire, police said.
