I have helped thousands of people get the PS5 and they sent me “ console hand pictures ” with ear-to-ear smiles to prove it. It prompted me to keep helping.
But the truth is, I haven’t bought the PlayStation 5 myself yet. I don’t follow my own advice. And I have hit all the speed bumps since launch that you can learn from.
It will look like:

I turned my Twitter account into a PS5 replenishment tracker a month ago. I hadn’t really planned this. I just wanted to complain about how difficult it was to buy a PlayStation 5 after so many failed attempts. I posted a link to the next drop the next day and people started to thank me warmly. It snowballed from there.
It turns out that I am not alone. Over 150,000 new subscribers later, I help actors, US Senators, TV news presenters, Olympians, varsity sports figures, and executives of big tech companies. I liked seeing the scope of my help. But more than the celebrity, I love seeing the pictures of the console in the hand of smiling everyday gamers the most.
My focus has shifted from buying as a PS5 to making sure others get one. It has been much more rewarding. But you would think I could always buy one now, right? Of my many failed attempts come from the lessons I should pass on – if you’re still on the hunt for the new Sony console four months after its launch.
1. I was not following a PS5 tracking account
On the PS5 launch day – November 12, 2020 – I had a doctor’s appointment and stupidly thought, ‘I’m just going to buy the PS5 while I’m in the waiting room’ ‘. When I didn’t receive it at the time, I thought, ‘I’m just going to get it before Black Friday and Cyber Monday. No? Before Christmas. Nothing? Surely in January? Wait, I still don’t have it in March ?!
Good end to this PS5 story. Happy to play a role. ❤️ https://t.co/WhtMOS2put25 February 2021
Getting notifications as soon as there is a PS5 restock has become critical. You don’t just try to “secure the bag” before others. An army of scalping robots designed to buy the system without hesitation, allowing scalping to resell the PS5 for 2x and, at the height of scarcity, 3x what it’s worth.
Follow a Twitter account and turn on notifications. There are others who do besides me, including Jake Randall, Cameron Ritz and Chito game to name a few. Not all retailers are first come, first served (Sony Direct is a lottery system) and most consoles sold are within a 30 minute window (people easily give up when, really, inventory is released in waves. ). But being there a minute helps.
2. I haven’t adopted the PS5 bundle – you should
My biggest mistake at the start was rejecting the PS5 bundle. Bundles, by nature, are more expensive; they come with PS5 games, controllers and other PS5 accessories.
The good news is that scalpers have a hard time reselling bundles – it’s much harder to resell the console with Spider-Man: Miles Morales and NBA 2K21, for example. You’ll need to find someone who wants both games and a second controller.
As long as you want those extras, the bundle is a great choice and inventory often lasts the longest at GameStop. As Walmart and Best Buy in the US collapse, GameStop is not falling victim to the weight of scalping robots. Bundles just aren’t worth it.
A few caveats: If you don’t want something like NBA 2K21, don’t buy the bundle. If NBA 2K1 costs $ 50- $ 60 now from Amazon, but the GameStop bundle still values it at $ 70, don’t buy the bundle. And if the bundle is significantly increased, as we see from third-party sellers in the marketplace, don’t buy the bundle.
Otherwise, kiss the package. I would have liked to have done it earlier.
3. I was not checking all PS5 stores
I mainly got attached to Amazon, Best Buy, and Walmart when initially researching my PS5. It was a mistake. Amazon has had very few restockings since launch, while Best Buy and Walmart require constant refreshing – the page often crashes until it runs out.
Based on the many responses to tweets I have received, subscribers have had the most success from GameStop, Target, and ANTonline. GameStop has been the easiest for people to get (see my bundle point), while Target lets you do in-store pickup after an online order (don’t show up at the store without a confirmed purchase).
ANTonline is a newcomer to a lot of people, but based on feedback I’ve received over the past month, the tech-focused store is the fastest. Their loaded bundles also sell out in three to five minutes, which is a lifetime in the PS5 restock world.
I would hesitate to trust stores outside of this list simply because there have been several scam sites trying to sell the PS5. You won’t get your PS5 or your cash, especially if you’re wondering whether to use Apple Pay or the Cash app (they’ll say they accept PayPal initially, but then turn it on and say it doesn’t work. ).
4. I used the wrong credit card to buy the PS5
It’s very easy to think that the hardest part of a PS5 restocking is getting the console into your virtual shopping cart. But it was at the cash desk that I found the biggest problems.
Sony PlayStation Direct, Sony’s official online store for its gaming brand, works like a lottery system, and if you’re chosen, it only gives you 10 minutes to pay. This means that you will need to decide on the shipping speed (paid PlayStation Plus members get super fast shipping within one to two days), provide your address, and enter your credit card information.
I made the mistake of using American Express, a credit card that is not supported by Sony Direct. When I tried to use another card, the original error message did not go away. I could only refresh the page, at which point the console was gone from my cart and I was restarted in the lottery line with no chance of getting it back.
The next week, when I walked through the Sony queue, I used Visa. It was also rejected. Someone on Twitter suggested that I turn off all Chrome pop-ups, adblockers, and extensions. There may be something conflicting with the Sony website causing me to be unable to complete the transaction. So far, I have not been chosen again to test this theory.
5. I didn’t have the will to buy the PS5
My desire to own a PS5 comes and goes. Before Christmas, I really wanted one. Then I saw success with a restocking of the Xbox Series X. I only tried the Sony console a few times in January. In mid-February, I was there again and launched the PS5 replenishment tracker.
I was also burnt out with distraction – often tweeting advice but not paying attention to my cart or captcha verification questions. I’ve failed so much that some of these online ordering processes surely think I’m a robot.
LOL, I totally put myself on the waiting list by tweeting this. 📝 Note to self: buy FIRST, tweet after. pic.twitter.com/K30lPDaDOkMarch 10, 2021
Persistence has been the # 1 trait for successful PS5 buyers, according to the many responses I’ve received on Twitter. People who started following me at 21,000 subscribers jumped at every notification I sent them for a month – and tried for four months in total. Some did ultimately find success. They usually say “I was about to give up, but …”
Too many people try for a week and come to a page that says “Out of Stock” or “Out of Stock”. It is essential to know that this is common and that the PS5 inventory is released in waves. Often times these people leave and then Best Buy, Target or Walmart activates the “ Add to Cart ” page again and others get it. it’s frustrating, but keep going.
Last minute success: happy ending for the PS5?
In writing this I had last minute success, although I’m still waiting to see if it will transpire in a PS5. On the last GameStop PS5 restock, I grabbed a bundle (again point 2 for the win), and am awaiting delivery.
Will I enjoy Spider-Man: Miles Morales? Will I need this second controller? It doesn’t matter as much as getting the console in your hand at this point.
I’m so far away that I won’t be 100% sure the PS5 is mine until I have it in my hands. Four months is too long to wait to own a console, and I’m of the same mindset as a lot of people. I’ve burned the best Netflix shows and the best Disney Plus shows already, and I’m looking forward to more interactive entertainment.
