Leaves are starting to fill my driveway. When does the collection of fall leaves start in my city?

Good timing.

Fall garden waste pickup begins Monday in Champaign County for some residents of Champaign and Mahomet.

Residents of Champaign city limits will have four chances, two weeks apart, to have their yard waste picked up, until December 10.

The city is divided into 10 zones, each with a different start date for the fall waste collection. On Monday, residents bounded by Kirby Avenue to the south, Prospect Avenue to the east, Springfield Avenue to the north and Mattis Avenue to the west will have the first opportunity to leave their bags for pickup.

Garbage – leaves and other non-woody plant material – should be placed in 30 gallon green paper garbage bags, within 10 feet of the sidewalk and 5 feet from any obstruction, by 6 a.m. on the scheduled day.

Residents of Champaign can find the correct pickup dates online.

“Twigs and branches can be bundled with non-metallic twine or placed in green paper garbage bags,” according to city instructions. “Branches cannot exceed 2 inches in diameter and 3 1/2 feet long. Packages cannot exceed 18 inches in diameter.

Muhammad’s fall leaf collection also begins on Mondays, every day of the week until November 24. The city is divided into five zones; Zone 1, north of US 150 and roughly west of West Street, will have the first garbage pickup at 6 a.m. Monday.

The Urbana garden waste collection will take place in three phases: November 1-5, November 15-19, and November 29-December 31. 3. Residents must drop off their bags at the curb at 6 a.m. on the scheduled pickup day for their U-Cycle. Bags taped or perforated will not be collected.

Rantoul’s schedule will be split between residents north and south of US 136.

Residents north of 136 must drop off their leaves at the curb by 7 a.m. on October 18. Pickup begins on October 25 for the southern part of Rantoul.
