According to the Federal Aviation Administration, Atlas Air flight 3591, a Boeing 767 cargo plane, crashed in Trinity Bay, near Anahuac, Texas, 30 miles from Houston Airport.
The plane seems to have flown for Amazon Prime Air, according to the FlightRadar24 flight tracking website.
The FAA said the accident had occurred just before 12:45 pm. local time Saturday while the plane was flying from Miami to Houston.
"I really thought it was thunder and then my son said," I just heard a plane crush. "I said what do you mean you just saw a plane coming down? It's like" Mom, he went straight down. Let's go to the water and see, "said the victim, Candace Dockens Chavez.
"It does not make sense because, that's what you would see in a movie, it never happens, nobody ever sees it," said Daniel Chavez.
Three crew members were on board the plane, says the FAA in a tweet.
Sheriff Brian Hawthorne of Chambers County said his agency was responding to an eyewitness and FAA confirmation that a large commercial aircraft crashed in Trinity Bay.
Hawthorne told sister station KFDM that since the appearance of the wreck, he did not think that "anyone" could have survived.
No official condition has been given as to the state of the three crew members on board while the search and rescue operations continue.
