Many familiar faces auditioned for America has talent this season, including two central The voice contestants (Brooke Simpson, who reached third place on this show in 2017, and this week EIGHT Hope Sarah Potenza, a four-chair star from 2015); Last comic standing winner Josh Blue; and even the Sklar Brothers (who have had their own hit shows on MTV, Comedy Central, and ESPN).

But in the penultimate episode of this week’s auditions, they couldn’t feign ignorance when one can argue the most famous person I have ever tried for EIGHT showed itself surprisingly.

Fans of 80s popcorn cinema surely recognized Michael Winslow the moment he opened his mouth – if not before, so did Terry, Simon, Howie and the rest of the EIGHT the casting did Tuesday. Michael played Officer Larvell Jones in the Seven Cops Academy films (and in the spinoff TV series of this hugely popular franchise as well), and he’s also played roles in box office hits like Gremlins and Mel Brooks Space balls. At the height of his fame, he even appeared at the 1986 Academy Awards, presenting the award for Best Sound Effects Editing to Back to the future.
But while an overview of Michael’s Wikipedia and IMDB pages shows he’s been working fairly steadily since then, he said on EIGHT that he had reduced his career to focus on family after the death of his first wife, Belinda Church, in 1993. (Several reports online cite a drug overdose as the cause of Belinda’s death, but Michael has gone under silence the most poignant details of her pre-performance interview with Terry.)
“I’ve always done that, and it was just a part of me. I’ve been making sounds since I was a kid, ”said Michael, as he explained that as an“ Air Force kid ”who moved frequently as he grew older, he had to make his own imaginary friends. “So after high school I hitchhiked in Los Angeles and didn’t know where to go. I didn’t know what I was going to do. I just knew I wanted to do this. And then I ended up being a part of this movie called Police academy, and suddenly my life changed from there. … I ended up doing pretty well! But I stopped making films because I left the company for my children. I had to raise them because I became a widower.
Michael then delighted the judges with a range of (as Sofia Vergara put it) “non-human” airplane and transistor radio noises, as well as a beatbox rendition of Queen’s “Another One Bites the Dust” which especially seemed to impress Heidi Klum – although I had hoped he would perform her aptly titled original single ‘I Am My Own Walkman’, which (fun fact!) ranked 60th in Australia in 1985. Unsurprisingly, Michael was very comfortable on stage on Tuesday (another Fun Fact: his very first TV appearance was The gong show, which was essentially the America has talent 1970s), although he seemed a bit breathless after his fun routine. And he got a standing ovation and four gigantic yeses from the panel.
“I always say that the best races I love to watch, because I love car racing, is sometimes all the great champions come back and they fight with the rookies. And that makes it a real competition. So the fact that you’ve come and set a standard here is so exciting to me. I am absolutely ecstatic. This is how you do it, ”proclaimed Simon.
Of course, some EIGHT Viewers might not think it’s quite fair for a champion with the CV of Michael Winslow to compete with the Season 16 rookies. But this season is packed with talent from all walks of life and all levels of experience, his victory is therefore hardly guaranteed. For now, Michael just seems happy to be back in the game.
“My life has changed for the better again, and I received another blessing,” said Michael, revealing that it was his son’s idea for him to be on the show. “Now, after raising my two children, I’m in a different phase. I think it’s my time. America has talent is where I can show that I still have something to offer. I still have some sounds to make, and there is still room for a little more.
The final America has talent The Season 16 auditions will take place next Tuesday, followed by a two-week hiatus. Live broadcasts will begin on August 10, following NBC’s broadcast of the Summer Olympics.
