HIGHLANDS RANCH, Colorado –

A sixth grade student who was hiding in a Colorado school shootout said he would not let shooters hurt him or his friends.

Nate Holley, 12, is a student at STEM School in Highlands Ranch, Colorado, where officials said two students opened fire on their classmates and teachers, killing one and injuring nine.

Holley said that when the gunshots sounded, his classmates and he hid in their classroom.

"I was hiding in a corner and they were right outside the door. I had my hand on the metal baseball bat just in case, because I was going to fight, if I wanted to fall, "he says.

Colorado officials said 18-year-old Devon Erickson and a girl were responsible for shooting at the school on May 7. Nine people were affected, including Kendrick Castillo, 18 years old. Castillo was shot while he was raging on an armed man to give students a chance to escape and hide.

Castillo died of his injuries.

"One of the kids said that, like a flash, he jumped. She said, "You know, he really saved me," says Castillo's father, John Castillo.

According to the Associated Press, a security officer credited with catching one of the alleged shooters would have fired his gun inside the school. Two Colorado news agencies, citing unnamed sources, also reported that the authorities were investigating that the guard had mistakenly shot a sheriff's deputy and injured a student.

CNN reports that Erickson took the two firearms used in the shooting of his parents.

Erickson should be formally charged on Friday.
