‘I wouldn’t want my worst enemy to go through this’: Mississippi woman takes care of her unvaccinated husband battling Covid-19

For a Mississippi couple who caught Covid-19, their results offer growing contrast. The woman, who is vaccinated, recovered after 10 days. But her unvaccinated husband has been in the hospital for 22 days.

“He’s trying so hard to get better and get home,” Alicia Ball said of her husband, William, who is currently in an intensive care unit fighting Covid-19. “We have a lot of people praying for us.

“He means so much to our family. He is the rock of our family.”

Sometimes holding back tears, she told CNN’s Chris Cuomo on Thursday that she was “emotionally, mentally and physically exhausted.”

Ball spoke to CNN from a hospital in Jackson, Mississippi, with her husband lying next to her in his bed with an oxygen mask. He is not currently on a ventilator.

“It’s real. It’s devastating.… It’s been really difficult,” she said. “I wouldn’t want my worst enemy to go through this.”

Ball added that she and her husband were reluctant to get the vaccine, but she eventually received the vaccine under the care of her doctor after fears about her asthma. She said she fell ill for 10 days when she contracted Covid-19 and had to go to the emergency room.

“But I haven’t been put here for 22+ days,” she said.

Ball said her skepticism about vaccines stems from not knowing how badly the virus can affect her.

“We just didn’t know the severity of the disease… in particular, this Delta variant.… It just hadn’t affected this close to us, yet,” she said.

Mississippi has one of the lowest vaccination rates in the country, with 34.4% of the total population fully vaccinated, according to state data.
The state is also designated as an area with high transmission of Covid-19, according to federal health data. Over the past week, Mississippi recorded 336 cases per 100,000 population, which is one of the highest rates in the United States.

The Delta variant of Covid-19 has spread across the country, compounding the concerns of health officials. Safety restrictions and mask guidelines are making a comeback as cases have risen by at least 10% in nearly every state in the United States over the past week, according to data from Johns Hopkins University.

The variant spreads faster and more easily than the first strain of coronavirus and can infect fully vaccinated people whose symptoms are usually milder.

Ball hopes sharing his Covid-19 experience will encourage his loved ones and others to get vaccinated.

“My God, I hope so. I hope it has helped our family, our church, our friends, everyone who sees this show. I hope it helps. That’s why I’m doing it,” a- she declared.
