IBM – the world's largest technology patent holder and one of the most advanced innovation labs on the planet – has heard some of you love foldable phones and asked someone you care about. One to hold his beer while he invented this folding smartwatch that can go from the watch to the phone through the complete tablet.
If it was another company, I probably laugh on this crazy device, but we are talking about Big Blue. These people do not laugh. Even though Apple and Google are headlines, IBM has been at the forefront of computer technologies since the 1950s, from the dominant 1960s mainframes to the first successful business intelligence model going through the first. The company is responsible for some of the most advanced innovations in history and it seems that they do not stop thinking outside the box.

But this patent released by the US Patent and Trademark Office on June 11, 2019 and discovered by the Dutch technical publication Lets Go Digital is perhaps too much.
The patent, entitled Variable display size for an electronic display device, describes a wristband device that looks like a watch. It has a rectangular display in portrait mode without framing.

Under the watch, seven additional screens are stored in compartments. While Lets Go Digital indicates that the patent does not clearly describe the operation of the deployment or assembly process, IBM says that users would be able to extend the display area from one to two to four to eight panels.
Eight panels of 3 x 2 inches each. It's 12 x 8 inches at its maximum size. At this point, your smartwatch is a tablet. Or a shield to defend himself. All that works.

Can IBM take out such a device from its magic hat? Probably. But given their current interest in consulting, artificial intelligence and quantum computing, I do not see them releasing a consumer product like this. And the Chinese will do it first, anyway.
