International Business Machines Corp. IBM,
appears to target part of the 7 nanometer CPU market currently dominated by Advanced Micro Devices Inc. AMD,
with its own chip. Late Sunday, IBM announced the launch of its Power10 chip, a 7nm processor to focus on the enterprise hybrid cloud computing market. In chip parlance, nanometers, or nm, refers to the size of the transistors that go on a computer chip, the general rule being that smaller transistors are faster and more efficient in using energy. All year round, AMD released new versions of its 7nm chip, which is manufactured by Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. TSM,
In July, AMD’s biggest rival Intel Corp. INTC,
said it was postponing its 7nm chip to at least the end of 2022 due to manufacturing issues. IBM said that Samsung Electronics Co. 005930,
manufactures the Power10. IBM shares were down 0.3% to $ 124.87 at the last check.
