Ice Cube calls out to Warner Bros. for allegedly “hijacking” the Friday franchise.
The multi-hyphen made this claim in a recent Instagram post that featured an illustration from the original cast. Ice Cube used the hashtag #FreeFriday before accusing the studio of refusing to greenlight additional sequels, which have been constantly teased over the decade.
“#Freefriday from the jaws of Warner Bros. refusing to do more sequels,” Ice Cube wrote in the caption. “They shattered the happiness of culture.”
The original Friday premiered in 1995, with Ice Cube and Chris Tucker leading the ensemble. The second installment, Next Friday, was released in 2000; and the third, Friday after next, debuted two years later.
In a 2019 appearance on ESPN The jump, Ice Cube has confirmed that he and his team have completed the storyline for a fourth sequel titled Last Friday and that his goal was to release the film on the 25th anniversary of the original’s release.
“We’re pushing for that, we’ve finished the script, we’re getting notes from the studio and it’s coming and going,” Ice Cube said. “Go to pre-production and start hiring. It would be nice if it came out on the 25th anniversary. “
Obviously, this plan never came to fruition, as Warner Bros. would apparently have no interest in expanding the beloved franchise. However, he cannot do so because the studio has reportedly refused to cede the rights to him.
Warner Bros. has yet to publicly respond to Ice Cube’s post.
