Iced Earth frontman Jon Schaffer faces six criminal charges related to the U.S. Capitol riot scenes in Washington DC on January 6.
After being photographed among angry protesters who stormed the Capitol as the US Congress convened to certify Joe Biden’s victory in the November presidential election, Schaffer surrendered to authorities in the afternoon of Jan. 17, according to a statement from the FBI field office in Indianapolis. The guitarist, who lives in Columbus, Indiana, will now face six criminal charges stemming from the violent protests, in which five lives were lost.
According to the FBI field office in Indianapolis, the six charges Schaffer faces are:
1) Knowingly entering or remaining in a building or restricted land without legal authorization
2) Disrupt the smooth running of government affairs
3) Knowingly commits an act of physical violence against any person or property in any building or restricted property
4) Violent entry and disorderly conduct in a Capitol building
5) Engage in an act of physical violence in a Capitol building
6) Parade, demonstration or picketing in a Capitol building
Regarding charge number five, Schaffer was reportedly among the rioters who sprayed Capitol Police with “ bear spray, ” an extra-powerful form of pepper spray.
More than 200 people are currently the subject of an FBI investigation in connection with the scenes of insurgency violence on January 6.
Following the violent clashes in Washington, members of Schaffer’s group released a statement expressing their opposition to the alarming scenes on Capitol Hill.
“We absolutely do NOT condone or support the riots or acts of violence in which the rioters were involved on January 6 on the US Capitol,” they wrote. “We hope that everyone involved on this day will be brought to justice to be investigated and held accountable.”
