Protesters in Idaho staged a mask burn event in the state capital on Saturday, as frustration over disruption to daily life linked to the coronavirus continues to escalate.
At least three lawmakers from the state legislature and Lt. Gov. Janice McGeachin were there to cheer them on, according to local media reports from the scene.
Video posted to Twitter suggests that most mask fires took place inside small, free-standing fires set in trash cans. At least one person has been filmed burning a photo of Joe Biden.
Many protesters, often accompanied by children in tow, posted signs saying “I will not choke”.
“We are here today to put the brakes on the government. To restore our Republican form of government, a government that has a balance between the branches, ”said Daar Moon, an organizer of the protest, in a Twitter video. “It’s a very widespread popular movement, an uprising in that regard, it’s going very well today here in Boise.
Last week, Idaho lawmakers introduced a bill to make mask warrants illegal. While there are no current statewide requirements, mask warrants are in effect in seven of Idaho’s 11 counties, according to the Associated Press.
