The end of 2020s Sonic the hedgehog movie confirmed to audiences that a fan favorite character will be in the sequel: Tails. And now there’s confirmation that another hugely popular character from the Sonic franchise is joining his buddy on the big screen, with a suave, superstar voice to boot.
Idris Elba took to social media on Tuesday to reveal he would be voicing the Echidna Knuckles in the Sonic the hedgehog 2, currently scheduled for release on April 8, 2022. Ben Schwartz will once again play Sonic alongside live-action cast James Marsden, Tika Sumpter, and Jim Carrey as Dr. Robotnik. The rumored plot sees Robotnik returns from an alien planet with Knuckles to find a powerful emerald, which is when Sonic and Tails team up to stop him. In video games, Knuckles was first presented as an antagonist, before switching sides. We imagine that will also happen here.
Jeff Fowler is directing the sequel again, and after the first film’s surprising box office success, there’s a good chance the appearance of these characters will be as true to the game world as possible. He wouldn’t want to. another situation like the last time after the first look at Sonic was revealed, the reaction online was so negative, millions of dollars were spent trying out the main character’s look. As expected, even the quick tease Elba dropped online has Brand Knuckles hands looking like they should.
There was also this title announcement, which once again hammered the fact that Tails will be a big part of the movie.
Elba is having a pretty solid week. In addition to this brand new franchise under his belt, he is receiving excellent reviews for his work at Bloodsport in James Gunn’s The suicide squad, another franchise that he could very well end up receiving in the future. But you must be thinking, if Sonic the hedgehog 2 is a success, we will probably have Sonic 3, 4, 5, who knows. And you know Knuckles will be there.
