Photos taken by fans earlier this year seemed to confirm it, but now it’s official: Knuckles will be joining Sonic the Hedgehog in Paramount Pictures’ upcoming live-action sequel, and he will be played by none other than Idris Elba.
Knuckles’ inclusion in the second Sonic movie seemed almost certain after fans spotted an echidna replacement prop (alongside others similar for Sonic and Tails) on set in April, and we’ve now received a first official teasing of the character’s cinematic look on Twitter.
The image – a close-up of Knuckles’ knuckles, of course – was shared by Idris Elba on social media after confirmation that the actor (most recently seen in James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad) will be voicing the character in Sonic the Hedgehog 2, which is due in theaters on April 8, 2022 if all goes well.

Elba will play alongside Ben Schwartz (the voice of Sonic), Jim Carrey (Doctor Robotnik), James Marsden, Tika Sumpter, Adam Pally and Natasha Rothwell.
Fans are also expecting a starring role for Sonic Tails longtime sidekick this time around following his appearance towards the end of the 2020 film – the big clue being the familiar double-tailed design of the 2 in the logo of the following. If so, Colleen O’Shaughnessey may well return to voice the character (especially given that she has told fans she wasn’t done with Tails earlier this year), but it probably won’t be too long before we know more.
