Longtime NFL reporter John Clayton believes there will be up to eight NFL head coach openings this offseason.
More importantly, Clayton is planning the Chicago Bears concert as one of them. Because if Clayton protects that head coach Matt Nagy and general manager Ryan Pace could avoid sacking at the end of the year, a five-game losing streak that dropped Chicago below 0.500 “made the tense things. And while I feel like “tense” is to say lightly, there’s no doubt that the hot seats are heating up after Sunday’s performance.
The idea of cleaning the house is easy for many to adopt. But for some, tThe idea of fighting against seven other teams for the best candidates in training could have people fearful. Some might even want to throw the box on the road for the next offseason. But maybe things aren’t as bleak as you might think otherwise. Of the eight projected jobs, Clayton lists only the Chargers, Broncos and Falcons ahead of the Bears. This would make the Bears the fourth most attractive job on the market. It might not sound like a lot, but getting ahead of the division rival Texans, Jaguars, Jets and Lions means something.
Looking for pros to open a coaching search in a crowded area? Look no further than the Chicago defense, which Clayton cites as a strength and a potential selling point. Despite Nagy’s recent call, they are a talented group that is not losing any key cogs in favor of free agency. Of course, they could make someone like Kyle Fuller or Akiem Hicks available in an exchange to try and free up some ceiling space. But that’s an article for another time.
On the other hand, the offense is one of the worst in the league and the quarterback position needs to be resolved.
Maybe rebuilding the offense can be a selling point for a forward-thinking coach with a progressive mindset and like-minded GM. The offense might just as well be a blank canvas on which new leadership can build upon upon arrival. And with the power to pick the next quarterback on the table, then maybe this job is more attractive than other positions. The challenge of building a modern attack while being backed by top-level defense should appeal to a number of candidates.
And yet, we are still far from getting there. The Bears still have five games to go and senior management has not hinted that they will drop Pace or Nagy in season. Again, there has been a lot of smoke in recent weeks. So much, in fact, we can’t look past that anymore.
