If Dillon Brooks is available, the Mavericks should be very interested

Finding quality guys to put around Luka Doncic will be the Mavericks’ main focus as long as Luka stays in a Dallas uniform. This brings us to the most recent NBA business rumor.

According to Chris Fedor of cleveland.com, Dillon Brooks is available “at the right price”.

Brooks (a former second-round pick) has carved out a great career in the NBA. He made his money playing alongside Ja Morant, providing a nice Robin-like presence to Ja’s Batman. He’s a decent NBA height at 6-foot-7, 225 pounds and is ideally suited in a situation similar to what he’s in right now – playing alongside an elite point guard in the backcourt.

Enter Luka Doncic and the Mavs.

What is the ideal prototype of a substantive partner for Luka? He needs someone who can keep the other team’s best perimeter player. Dillon Brooks ticks this box. Luka needs someone who can space the floor. Brooks checks this box. Luka needs someone who can handle some of the offensive load when he’s on the bench. Brooks checks this box.

Will Dillon Brooks ever be an All-Star? I doubt. He struggles to reach the rim, which ultimately makes him an ineffective scorer (42% of the field for his career). But he’s the perfect guy to throw on the court next to an All-NBA first-team guy like Luka.

Brooks ‘relentless ball pressure would help significantly improve the Mavs’ porous defense, and his size also gives them alignment flexibility. The ideal scenario would be to play Brooks alongside Luka and Tim Hardaway Jr. This makes the offense and defense more dynamic than they currently are.

The best part about Dillon Brooks right now? His contract. In the 2021-22 season he would earn just over $ 12 million and the following year he would earn even less. It is almost impossible to find the production that Brooks provides at the low cost of its contract.

Who knows what Memphis would ask for in a Brooks deal. It’s quite possible that this is way more than what the Mavs could (or should) pay. The report is that it is available “for the right price”. I mean … not a lot of NBA players are not available at the “right price”.

So is this a pipe dream? Probably. But is it worth calling the Mavs front office? Absoutely.
