As the leading supermarket chain in the United States, Kroger is a lot of our favorite grocery stops. But while it’s generally very reliable, it’s no stranger to the occasional recall. In June, customers had to throw away the pre-made pasta dishes they bought from Kroger due to undeclared allergens, and then in August, the cooked shrimp from the grocery store was recalled for potential salmonella contamination. Now the chain has had to recall another food for bacteria issues. Read on to find out if you should throw out any of your more recent Kroger purchases.

On September 16, The Kroger Co. announced that it was voluntarily recalling its branded 16-ounce bagged kale, produced by Baker Farms. According to an announcement issued by the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the product has been recalled due to a possible Listeria monocytogenes contamination. The affected bags have a Universal Product Code (UPC) of 11110-18170 and an expiration date of September 18, 2021, “which is printed on the front of the package under the light blue bar”, according to the notice of the FDA.
The FDA says it has not received any reports of illness related to Kroger brand kale, but consuming products infected with this bacteria can have serious health consequences. According to the agency, Listeria monocyotgenes is an organism that can “cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail and elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems.” But even healthy people can become infected with listeria and have short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain, and diarrhea. “Listeria infection can also cause miscarriages and stillbirths in pregnant women,” warns the FDA.

Kroger brand kale is just one of three recent Baker Farms recalls. On September 17, the FDA reported that the company was also recalling its Baker Farms and SEG Grocers brands from one pound of plastic bagged kale due to listeria contamination. According to the agency, Baker Farms was told by a customer that their product had tested positive for Listeria monocytogenes September 15.
Customers who have purchased any of the affected products are “urged not to consume the product but to return it to the place of purchase for a full refund” or to dispose of the product, according to the FDA. The recalled Kroger product was distributed through stores in the “Columbus, Nashville and Atlanta Divisions, serving Columbus and Toledo, Ohio; Knoxville, Tennessee; eastern West Virginia; and the states of Georgia, Alabama and South Carolina, ”but the grocer says he removed all potentially contaminated produce from the produce shelves on Sept. 16. Baker Farms says the other affected products were distributed to stores between August 30 and September 1, mainly after being sold in states such as Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia and Louisiana. , Mississippi, Missouri, North Carolina, New York and Virginia.
