A resident of Ocean County infected with measles may have exposed other people to the highly contagious disease at a Lakewood health center this week.
Anyone who visited the Center for Health Education in Medicine and Dentistry (CHEMED) at 1771 Madison Ave., Lakewood on July 10th between 1:45 pm and 6:00 pm. may have been exposed to measles, announced Friday the New Jersey Department of Health.
The health department asked people visiting CHEMED to call their doctor "immediately to discuss a potential exposure and risk of developing the disease".
This last case of measles does not seem to be related to the outbreak of the disease earlier this year.
The last reported measles case in Ocean County occurred in early May.
People who had not been vaccinated or had not had measles risked contracting the disease, which usually started with symptoms such as fever, cough, and a rash that usually started in the face.
These symptoms may not develop until July 31 for potentially infected individuals at the health center.
Measles can also lead to serious complications such as pneumonia and encephalitis, swelling of the brain, and can lead to miscarriage, premature birth or a low birth weight baby for pregnant women, said the CDC.
It can spread by air when someone coughs or sneezes and that a person can get sick if it comes in contact with mucus or saliva from an infected person, officials said. .
