We’ve already seen a few videos showing the internals of the iPhone 12 mini and iPhone 12 Pro Max, which officially launched in stores today. Now iFixit has finally shared the first part of its Exploded view of iPhone 12 mini, which they call a “little phone”.
All four of the iPhone 12 models Apple introduced this year have extremely similar internal components, but because their sizes are so different, so is the internal layout of each phone. And we can clearly see it here on the iPhone 12 mini teardown.
The first noticeable difference iFixit noticed relates to the antennas, which are more asymmetrical on the iPhone 12 mini, which was probably an engineering decision since the phone doesn’t have enough internal space to accommodate the same antenna design. than the larger models.
The iPhone 12 mini brings a cool new feature: increased grille asymmetry (presumably much to Jony Ive’s chagrin). It looks like the smaller phone needs a bit more space for this antenna band.
The camera module included in the iPhone 12 mini is almost the same as the regular iPhone 12, but it doesn’t have plastic space like the larger model – and that’s because the iPhone 12 uses a layout similar to the iPhone 12 Pro, but without the LiDAR scanner.
Apple had to remove this camera space on the iPhone 12 mini to free up space for other components. iFixit was also surprised at how Apple has incorporated the same large cameras as other iPhones into such a small phone.
We’re in awe of the extra camera on this small-sized phone, but it may have come at the cost of the already paltry battery life. It’s hard to stay mad at this little guy, though.
Regarding the battery, iFixit has confirmed that the component found in the iPhone 12 mini has a higher capacity than the battery in the 2020 iPhone SE, dropping from 6.96 Wh to 8.57 Wh. However, that’s still a lot less than the 10.78 Whr of the regular iPhone 12 battery.
Apple has also downsized the other mini components of the iPhone 12, including the Taptic Engine, but there isn’t much room for a larger battery on this device.
This mini battery packs a surprising 8.57 Wh. That’s more juice than the 6.96 Wh of the 2020 iPhone SE, but naturally below the 10.78 Wh of the standard 12 it’s stacked on.
iFixit will share more details on the iPhone 12 mini teardown in the coming days. Until then, you can check out all the photos of the teardown on the iFixit official website.
