iFixit has got their hands on Apple’s new M1-powered MacBook Airs and MacBook Pros, which of course means their team has been tearing up laptops to find out what’s inside. And, while the Air and Pro have set revolutionary new standards for performance and efficiency, it turns out that this can be attributed almost entirely to the M1 chip rather than any particular design changes.
Take the new MacBook Pro, for example. Here’s this year’s Intel model on the left, with the new M1 version on the right:
The internal layouts of the two computers are almost identical. iFixit notes that the M1 model uses the exact same fan component as its predecessor Intel, for example, which really improves the efficiency of the M1 chip given the difference in noise level between the two computers.
The MacBook Air, meanwhile, also looks a lot like the Intel version, but with the fan omitted. iFixit expressed a little surprise that the design of the Air and the Pro did not converge more, given that computers now use identical processors, but Apple’s design clearly focused on using the M1 as a replacement for its existing products.
