The turquoise female iguana that the police named "Copper" has a broken leg, a metabolic bone disease and other ailments, told WEWS-TV officials of the Lake County Humane Society. The animal needs a surgical procedure that will cost about $ 1,600, but this will only be possible if a judge agrees because the Humane Society is not the owner, said Saturday the coordinator of the hospitality company, Allison Rothlisberger.
The Humane Society is looking for tax-deductible donations to pay for surgery. Copper is currently receiving basic care to make the lizard as comfortable as possible, Rothlisberger said.
The owner of the iguana, aged 49, was charged with animal cruelty and disorderly behavior, two counts of misdemeanor.
According to authorities, the man launched a menu on a waitress at a Perkins restaurant in Painesville on April 16. When a manager intervened, the man removed the iguana under his shirt, turned it around and threw it on him, police said. The authorities did not say what caused the attack.
Painesville is about 30 miles northeast of downtown Cleveland.
