Ilhan Omar defends his controversial comments on 9/11

WASHINGTON – Representative Ilhan Omar defended her comments on the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks on her first Sunday show on "Face the Nation".

Host Margaret Brennan explained how the son of a September 11th victim wore a t-shirt at a commemorative ceremony last week that featured Omar's controversial word "some people did something".

"Do you understand why people thought it was offensive?" Brennan asked.

Omar, a Democrat from Minnesota, did not answer yes or no.

"September 11 was therefore an attack on all Americans. It was an attack on us all. And I certainly could not understand the weight of the pain that must be felt by the victims of 9/11 families, but I think it's really important to us that we do not forget the consequences of what's wrong. Happened after September 11, "Omar told me.

"Many Americans have now been deprived of their civil rights," Omar said.

"As a Muslim, so I was talking not only about the Americans who were attacked that day, but the next day I woke up while my compatriots were now treating me as a suspect," she added.

Omar was also questioned about the dubious rhetoric she has used since becoming a member of Congress.

"I think it's very important for us to recognize that it's a new Congress, a diverse Congress and that we are not only diverse in our race, our ethnicity, our religion, but we are also diversified in our perspective, in our pain, in our struggles and the hopes and dreams we have and the type of America we want to shape for all of us, "said Omar.
