“I think there are failures happening,” the Minnesota congresswoman told Brian Stelter, CNN’s chief media correspondent, on “Reliable Sources” on Sunday. “And it’s really important for us to show the grassroots humanity and deal with the causes of migration in the region.”

The media have largely focused on the number of unaccompanied children at the border. But Omar urges the media to tackle the root causes of the immigration crisis and focus on “cruel and contradictory” foreign policies.

Conversations around immigration are currently centered on “winning political points,” Omar said.

“It’s not about the safety of Americans,” she added.

Omar took a stand of his own week, wrote a letter to Biden’s director of domestic policy, Susan Rice and homeland security secretary, Alejandro Mayorkas, urging the Biden administration to issue an executive order announcing an elimination plan progressive contracts between the ICE and the State. , county and local prisons and prisons.

On Sunday, Mayorkas declined to provide a timeline for when the Biden administration will open new facilities capable of handling the influx of unaccompanied children to the southern border.
