Illinois star goalie Ayo Dosunmu is out indefinitely after sustaining a facial injury, the school said Thursday.
Dosunmu was injured in Tuesday’s loss to Michigan State. He was badly soiled by Spartans rookie Mady Sissoko late in the game; Sissoko was ejected after being hit with a flagrant 2 foul. However, Dosunmu did not leave the game.
Brad Underwood did not offer a specific timeframe for Dosunmu’s return, but said he would not play Nebraska on Thursday night.
“Ayo can’t wait to play,” Underwood said. “We hope he will return to our training.”
Dosunmu is a wooden prize contender, averaging 21.0 points, 6.3 rebounds and 5.3 assists. The 6-foot-5 guard is No. 35 in the ESPN NBA Draft rankings.
Illinois, No.5 in this week’s AP poll, saw their seven-game winning streak come to an end against Michigan State on Tuesday. The Fighting Illini are 16-6 overall, 12-4 in the Big Ten.
