Actor and producer Morgan Freeman has given a firm ‘no’ to the movement to fund the police.
“I’m not for police funding at all,” Freeman told Black Enterprise’s Selena Hill in an interview posted on Instagram. “Police work is, aside from all the negativity that surrounds it, it’s very necessary for us to have them and most of them are guys doing their jobs. They go about their daily business. There are police officers who would never take out their guns except within range, that sort of thing. “
Freeman made the remarks while promoting his new movie with actor Frankie Faison (Thread), The murder of Kenneth Chamberlain, which is based on the actual murder of a 68-year-old black veteran who was fatally shot by police inside his home in White Plains, NY.
The true story concerns a former Marine with bipolar disorder who was killed in 2011 by police after accidentally triggering his medical alert device, which led to a confrontation with the police which led to his death.
Freeman, who has said he’s not treated like an average black man because of his celebrity status, is funding a program at the University of Mississippi for evidence-based policing and reform.
Faison, who plays Chamberlain in the film, was also not in favor of the funding.
“Well, I agree with Morgan,” Faison told Hill. “I am certainly not in favor of funding police officers.”
