I’m suddenly very interested in Fenyx Rising Immortal Expansions

I’m not too surprised when Ubisoft announces that one of its great games will receive loads of post-release expansions. This is news when they don’t. But I’m surprised at how interesting and unusual the recently announced extensions for next month Immortals Fenyx Rising seems to be.

The first one, “A New God”, looks like I expected for an action-adventure game that looks like The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild in the midst of Greek mythology. This expansion will allow you to “overcome the legendary trials and challenges of the gods of Olympos to change the Greek Pantheon and fulfill your destiny.”

The second expansion, “Myths of the Eastern Realm” caught my eye.

Here is the official description:

Play a brand new story inspired by Chinese mythology, where you will meet new gods and face off against exotic monsters in a far away land, playing as Ku, a new hero.

I did not expect the game go to China, and I’m not sure I wanted to. Immortals is produced by a group of Ubisoft studios, the overall project being led by many Assassin’s Creed Odyssey Ubisoft Quebec team.

The Chinese expansion, however, will be primarily carried out by Ubisoft Chengdu, one of Ubisoft’s studios in China, according to a representative from Ubisoft.

Ubisoft installs its games around the world and uses studios around the world to create them, but development is generally carried out by studios in Canada or France. It’s quite unusual to see one of the so-called satellite studios leading an unusual project, and even more unusual – and quite exciting – to see that a Chinese studio will essentially be leading the creation of a Chinese-themed game for Ubisoft. (yes, it’s an expansion, but with its own main character it looks like it could be its own thing.) Of course, we’ve had more access to the China-developed game in the west this year, thanks to the enormous success of Genshin impact.

I am also very curious to know Immortals‘third expansion, which will add a new adventure that plays like a top-down brawler. Rather wild.

Immortals must be released before one of its interesting DLC. The game is released on December 3 for virtually all gaming platforms. Expansions will follow in the months beyond.
