Fitzgerald had already posted photos with Heath on her Instagram account, but that was the first time she'd discussed their on-air relationship. When asked why she had decided to announce her news publicly, Fitzgerald responded that her engagement was an opportunity to show people the happiness that can accompany her in their true love.
"I just felt like it was natural. People connect to watch every morning; they are our family and we are theirs, "Fitzgerald said. "And because it's a month of pride, I did not just want to talk about myself. I want to help others know that being different is good. "
Fitzgerald, 33, and Heath, 30, met about two years ago. Heath played basketball for the College of William & Mary before playing professionally abroad. She is currently in the sale of medical equipment. Fitzgerald is a graduate of Howard University and has worked for NBC in Washington for the last four years.
"She likes to joke about the fact that we met the" old way "about Tinder," Fitzgerald said of his fiancée.
"To meet her was surreal. I knew she was different from the beginning and, even if it sounds clichĂ©, it was she who was … It is a beautiful person, internally and externally.
To celebrate their engagement, the couple went to Barcelona's wine bar, a downtown tapas restaurant, for dinner.
Although Fitzgerald does not know how people would react to her news, she said that she had received extremely positive feedback since the announcement.
"What is particularly encouraging for me is hearing people say that they sent the video to their cousin or that it gave them strength because they have afraid to go out, "Fitzgerald said. "For people looking for insurance, I want to use my platform to reinforce the message that they deserve to be happy."
