In the UK, Star-Spangled Banner performed at Windsor Castle to mark 9/11 anniversary

Twenty years after Queen Elizabeth II called for the Star Spangled Banner to be played in front of Buckingham Palace in solidarity with the United States, a day after September 11, the American anthem was once again played to mark the 20th anniversary attacks.

The United States’ national anthem was played outside Windsor Castle during the Changing of the Guard ceremony on Saturday.

The Queen broke with tradition by asking that the hymn be played by the guard in front of Buckingham Palace, in the aftermath of the September 11, 2001 attacks. After the United States, the United Kingdom lost the most citizens on September 11, with 67 killed.

The representative of the United States to the United Kingdom thanked the monarch for her tribute.

“Today I was honored to hear the guard play The Star-Spangled Banner again at Windsor Castle,” tweeted Ambassador Philip T. Reeker, UK Chargé d’Affaires ad interim. “I thank Her Majesty for this special tribute.”

On Saturday, Her Majesty also issued a statement to President Biden paying tribute to those killed in the terrorist attack.

“As we mark the 20th anniversary of the terrible attacks of September 11, 2001, my thoughts and prayers – along with those of my family and the entire nation – are with the victims, survivors and affected families, as well as first responders. and first aiders called to work, ”she said.

In her statement, the Queen referred to her 2010 visit to the World Trade Center and said the trip “is etched in my memory.”
