India has approved Johnson & Johnson’s single-dose Covid-19 vaccine for emergency use, Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya said.
The pharmaceutical giant had requested approval for emergency use of its vaccine, the company said on Friday. The vaccine will be shipped to India under a supply agreement with local vaccine maker Biological E Ltd, J&J said.
Indian health authorities have so far approved the use of vaccines developed by AstraZeneca, Bharat Biotech, Russian institute Gamaleya and Moderna.
Coronavirus cases around the world topped 200 million earlier in the week, according to a Reuters tally, as the more infectious Delta variant threatens areas with low vaccination rates and strains health systems.
India has reported an average of 30,000 to 40,000 new cases of coronavirus each day since July, and the federal government has warned that although cases have fallen by a high of 400,000 a day at the height of the second wave murderous, the danger has not yet diminished.
