All Hollywood A-listers have not yet joined social media, but now we can add to the list of those who connect online with their fans. On Wednesday, Julia Roberts joined Instagram, and not only is her account surprisingly unobtrusive, but it's also the first time that fans have access to Roberts' life at this level. Could anyone have predicted this kind of online culture when Pretty Woman was released for the first time?
Even though Roberts only posted twice, she has already ambaded over 390,000 followers (she herself does not follow anyone). Her profile picture seems to be a selfie of her wearing sunglbades, and her bio says simply, "human". She could have been a little more descriptive there, because during her career she definitely deserved the right to boast about her accomplishments, but there is something really nice in the fact she keeps things as simple as possible.
And then, of course, there is the first picture that she shared, which is just a picture of herself sitting in the grbad under a tree, showing her broad smile to the camera. The legend? "Home", with the emoji sun. Excellent choice, Roberts – and just as cold as the rest of his profile is far away.
Up to now, it's unclear how much interaction Roberts is planning to take on Instagram because she has her comments disabled on her first post. But really, all that comes from it is more than what the fans had before. Celebrities who choose to live their lives regardless of social media seem to be rewarded with more intimacy, but they may also feel less accessible to fans. It's quite within their rights to share as much or as little as they want, but Roberts jumping on the Instagram bandwagon makes it feel easier to connect with.
And speaking of the fans? Yes, they seem very excited. People have been everywhere on Twitter in the last 24 hours, sharing their feelings about this major development for Roberts. It seems that the general consensus is that it's great news – even though we've all been waiting for so long that to happen. It is worth the wait, right?
And now that Roberts is on Instagram – something that many of us would never have thought possible – the possibilities are endless. Will she continue to share her most relaxing photos of herself, or will we have some glimpses into her daily life? At this point, anything can happen.
Who knows? Maybe Roberts will even pave the way for other celebrities to follow in his footsteps. It would certainly be interesting to have a better insight into the lives of celebrities who have already been "untouchable" like Roberts. What's Angelina Jolie for breakfast? Are there memes that Emma Stone finds fun? What does Jennifer Aniston actually do when she is not working? Do not act as if you have never been curious about these things.
Even though none of these stars will ever join Instagram, Roberts has done it, and it's going to be so much fun to see what she decides to share. Until now, it looks like she's really keeping it real, and it's nice to see that side of it because it's probably a lot closer to who she is when she's surrounded by friends and family.
Now all we can do Just click "follow" and wait for Roberts to share more photos – and maybe even convince some of his fellow A-listers to join us . George Clooney, where are you?
