When the government headed by the BJP launched its version of the electrification scheme of the village – the Rs 76,000 crore Deendayal Upadhyaya Gram Jyoti Yojana (DDUGJY) – – there were an estimated 18,452 non-electrified villages. Subsequently, 1,275 additional villages were added to the list.
According to official estimates, about 3.14 rural households, or 17 percent of the 17.99 rural households, still do not have access to electricity. The largest number of them are in Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Assam, Jharkhand and Odisha.
To supply electricity to all households by the end of 2018, the government launched the Pradhan Mantri Sahaj Bijli Ghar Har Yojana or Saubhagya. Of the 16,320 crs of Rs needed for this task, 12,320 crores have already been provided for in the budget of the Union.
