More than 40% of the 95K sounders 'approve' abusive tweets directed against Sushma Swaraj | News from India

NEW DELHI: More than forty percent of those who participated in an online survey conducted by Foreign Minister Sushma Swaraj "approved hateful and abusive comments directed against her after her ministry issued a pbadport to an interreligious couple.

Late on Saturday night, Swaraj sought public opinion on the misogynistic and personal attack she had been experiencing on social media for a few days by hosting a Twitter poll.

"Friends: I've liked tweets, it's been happening in recent days, do you approve of such tweets?", She tweeted.

Although the majority (94%) of the 94,000 people disapprove of the comments (at the time of writing this report) ; a significant number of online voters responded "yes" to Swaraj's question.

The survey was organized by Swaraj after she became a victim of incessant abuse and harbadment from online users who believed her The ministry's decision to grant a pbadport to interfaith couple equates to "the appeasement of minorities".

Even her husband was not spared. On Saturday, Swaraj Kaushal tweeted a screenshot of tweet asking him to "learn" from the minister "not to make Muslim appeasement".

This comes a few days after Swaraj was dragged and abused on Twitter during a controversy involving the issuance of a pbadport to an interfaith couple.

A Seva Kendra pbadport official, Vikas Mishra, in Lucknow, was transferred after the interdenominational couple alleged that he had humiliated the couple when they went to the office with their pbadport applications recently.

According to the couple, Mishra asked the husband to convert to Hinduism and arrested the woman for marrying a Muslim.

A social media section had attacked Swaraj and the ministry to take action against Mishra, saying that he was simply doing his duty.

The minister had retweeted some of the tweets that were even abusive and community-based.

Asked whether the Department of External Affairs plans to take action against the trolls, Ministry spokesman Raveesh Kumar said: "EAM (Foreign Minister) has responded to these questions. Malicious tweets … in its own way and in a way that she deemed appropriate, I do not think I have anything to add.

The attack against Swaraj was unequivocally condemned by several sections of the society, including the former chief minister of Jammu and Kashmir Mehbada Mufti.

"Horrified by the ugly deception that Sushma Swarajji suffered, absolutely scandalous, if our own Minister of External Affairs is not spared, what hope is there for another woman?" she tweeted.
