A private bus fell into a deep gorge in Uttarakhand's Pauri district on Sunday morning, killing at least 48 people and wounding 10 others, the police said. "The accident occurred near the village of Gween, near Dhumakot, when the bus bound for Ramnagar fell into a 200-meter-deep gorge killing 45 people on the spot and leaving 13 wounded" Pauri SP Jagat Ram Joshi told PTI on the phone. The accident occurred around 8:30 am.
Three others died of their injuries later in the day at the PHC, in Dhumakot, where the wounded were rushed after the teams Rescue has reached the area, said Joshi. The seriously wounded were sent back to Ramnagar while eight were on treatment at Dhumakot, the SP said.
Although the exact cause of the accident is not yet known, the bus was carrying pbadengers beyond its capacity. According to one official, the vehicle's seating capacity was 28.
