The grand mehndi and engagement of Akash, the son of Naka Ambani and Nita Ambani, with Shloka Mehta, had a strong connection with Calcutta – DJ Vicky, who played both times at Ambani residence in Mumbai last week. t2 chatted with Vicky, the owner of the Myx nightclub.

Congratulations on playing at Akash Ambani and Shloka Mehta's engagement party! How did it go?

I played at the wedding of Isheta Salgaocar, niece of Mukesh and Anil Ambani, in Goa two years ago. I've also played at other top level weddings and about two months ago, I was asked to play at the Ambani event. I played at the mehndi ceremony and at the engagement party that took place the first two days.

What was the state of mind of the mehndi and the engagement?

Mehndi was a total family affair, so I kept the fun and energetic mood with clbadic titles like Mehendi hai ransack wali, Nach de ne, Say na, say na and hold leke. Tareefan, Rock the Party and Badshah songs are the most requested songs.

How would you summarize your gaming experience in Antilla, the Ambani residence?

It's one of the most prestigious weddings I've done up to now. It was clbad-meets-grandeur with some of the biggest Bollywood stars present. It gives me great pleasure that a DJ from Calcutta has been called to play their function although there has been a lot of DJs in Mumbai. Definitely memorable for me.

What makes you elected for private events and A-list weddings?

I take a lot of requests and signings, so I am closer to my client as a friend than as a professional DJ playing for money. I prioritize the personal satisfaction of the client. If someone is happy with my job at his wedding, he will contact me again when someone else in the family will be getting married.

Do you have a pre-concert ritual when you play high level weddings?

No! I do my ritual every morning when I leave the house, I install in the car and I go down to the mandir … I pray. I never do background research and I do not play a role because when I meet a client and talk to him, I understand what kind would work for this crowd.

One thing that a DJ should not do during a private event?

Certainly not be rude and severe with your guest. Also, do not be too talkative about the microphone and talk about shit.

What's an ideal playlist should have in a sangeet, a mehndi, an after-party and a pool party?

The playlist should be more Bolly-retro remixes with New Age songs because it's the event where people from all age groups are there. Mehndi talks about softer and more traditional music that is groovy but not too pumped. The craze these days is the after-party, where music is more EDM and hip-hop with 70% international success and 30% Bollywood. For Sangeet, it's 80% Bollywood and 20% international success.
Sundowners or pool parties are also popular; they are more fun where the water and the rain dance are the main elements. The reading list is more commercial, faster and old school songs like Subha na hone, Bachna ae haseeno

What has changed in music over the years?

Nightclub-wise, a lot has changed. At the time, trance and hip-hop were the main genres and now it has become very Bollywood. People used to understand the music, there was a category of crowd. But now it's divided … you have hip-hop, Bollywood and then EDM.

And the girl-boy ratio of the crowd was perfect;

You've been a DJ for 22 years and you always said you were a DJ and club owner later …

Yes, even today, I'd rather be the DJ of Anticlock ( The HHI), rather than being the owner of Myx. These days were golden. I have lived the best 10 years of my life at Anticlock and we used to play until 7 am with a trimmed floor! The DJ has always been my first love and to be honest, we opened Myx for my love of DJing and music.
