Hush-hush about the injury Wriddhiman Saha exposes the messy side of Indian cricket | locust

Thumb, hamstrings or shoulder? The true nature of Wriddhiman Saha's injury has become the talking point after Bengal failed to make the test team for the England series. Typical of the hush-hush nature of Indian cricket and its officials, there is no communication from BCCI about Saha's injury. On Wednesday, the coaches named Rishabh Pant of Delhi and Dinesh Karthik of Tamil Nadu as the two goalkeepers of the first three tries in England.

Unlike cricket boards in Australia or South Africa, the BCCI medical team is often vague about injuries. On Thursday, Tufan Ghosh, COO of the National Cricket Academy, was not available for comment. Players go to the NCA to heal wounds and plan their rehab.

We learn that Saha is "officially" out with a bad shoulder and will need surgery in the UK. He might even miss the Australian tour later this year. On May 28, BCCI said that Saha was thumb-injured while he was playing for Sunrisers Hyderabad in the IPL Qualifier 2 against Kolkata Knight Riders on May 25 at Eden Gardens, Kolkata. On June 2, Saha was expelled from the single test against Afghanistan in Bangalore.

Saha was injured in the shoulder

According to a BCCI press release on January 16, Saha missed two test matches in South Africa following a tendon injury. After scoring 0 and 8 in the Cape Test, Saha did not take part in the tour as Parthiv Patel was drafted for the other two tests while Dinesh Karthik was named alternate.

Between January and May, there has never been any evidence of Saha's dubious shoulder of the BCCI medical team. Hence his speculation that he may have been cut off from the team for reasons other than injury.

Did the NCA ruin Saha's rehabilitation? The apparent confusion over NCA's communication with BCCI on Saha's recovery only makes it more confusing.

Saba Karim, managing director of BCCI (Operations), says that there is no miscommunication between NCA and BCCI. "There was no communication problem, I think it's better to check with the team management on this," Karim said.

But is the management of the team seriously looking to regain Saha's services quickly?

Without an official medical update on Saha despite the latest revelations, this could prove to be a mouth-in-mouth situation for BCCI after staying mum and adding to the confusion. With Patel and Karthik playing musical chairs for the specialized test goalkeeper post and Saha's injury clearly mismanaged, India's game plan seems to be going awry. The inclusion of Pant as a backup only adds to the theory that India is only looking for a drummer who can keep wickets, not the other way around.
