It Is Impossible to Summarize the Content of Cosmos -the Carl Sagan-Presented A Personal Journey 2013 An Odyssey of Space-Time and Possible Worlds to be presented next March – in a few hundred words. After all, how do you describe and document something as humble as the beginnings of the universe, as involved as the history of astrophysics, and as complicated as what we still try to learn about our place in the galaxy? This is a daunting task, but given their expertise and collective enthusiasm, co-writers Ann Druyan and Brannon Braga and presenter Neil deGrbade Tyson are up to the challenge.
"For me, it's a moral mandate" We try to make science accessible because it's really a very human endeavor, it's a very emotional undertaking, "said M Braga, adding that "we are trying to make science accessible". wrote A Personal Journey with her late husband Sagan, echoing Braga's feelings about the show's mission and pointing out that she had never seen the world in this state of agitation before. Yet she is able to find joy in the work of her life and cited Cosmos as the culmination of her career.
And what will this highlight look like in 2019? Druyan and Braga are still a little loquacious about what Possible Worlds will entail, but here's what we know.
Braga confirmed that will focus in part on the heroes of science whose stories have not been told on television before. Naturally, the season will exceed our atmosphere, delivering the promise of the subtitle. Braga said that one of his favorites focuses on the search for extraterrestrial life and whether or not we are ready for it.
Tyson was also reluctant to share what subjects Possible Worlds will address (though, judging by my favorite shot in the trailer, we can guess that at least one episode will explore the concept of multiverse, leading to infinite Tysons). He dropped some clues to the overall arc of the show and clarified what he thought Cosmos as well the original series as what it became unique
"I think we managed to maintain the spiritual center of what the original Cosmos was at a level where you no longer think of [it] as a documentary, even though it's technically, he added, "He operates on another level, reaching out … what role does science play in our understanding of our place in the universe."
Of course, you can not not talk to Tyson without talking about pop culture – that Tyson considers it more of a necessity than something to do.
"I have some fluency in pop culture," he said. When I talk to someone about science, I'm going to dress up their scaffold of pop culture with science as it applies to [them] and they eat it. This reinforces the pop culture that they carry with them. And this is part of what makes Tyson the ideal presenter for Cosmos . His tendency to provide context through easy-to-understand ideas is reflected in A Spacetime Odyssey and will surely do the same in Possible Worlds . I am going to start badembling my countdown of the paper chain next March and I encourage you to do the same.
