HYDERABAD: The Indian shuttles were successful at the opening day of the BWF World Championships in Nanjing on Monday. With the exception of Prajakta Sawant and Sanyogita Ghorpade, who lost to Bengisu Ercetin and Turkey's Naziican Inci 20-22, 14-21, the rest of the Indian team has qualified for the second round with direct game wins.

HS Prannoy, 11th seeded, defeated Abhinav Manota of New Zealand 21-12, 21-11 in the men's singles first round. Sameer Verma pbaded Lucas Corve of France 21-13, 21-10 to establish a second encounter against Lin Dan. The five-time world champion has released Mark Caljouw of the Netherlands 21-14, 21-14. Lin Dan beat Sameer in the quarterfinals of the New Zealand Open a few months ago.

The first day, there were no major upheavals in men. World champion Viktor Axelsen of Denmark, Olympic champion Chen Long of China, local hopeful and third favorite Shi Yuqi have not been bothered by their lower ranking opponents.

The men's duo Manu Attri and Sumeeth Reddy won an easy victory over Bulgarians Daniel Nikolov and Ivan Rusev 21-13, 21-18. They will meet Japan's Takuto Inoue and Yuki Kaneko in the second round.

All pairs of mixed doubles advanced in the second round without much difficulty. Bronze medalist at the London Worlds, Ashwini Ponnappa and her teenage partner Satwiksairaj Rankireddy eliminated Niclas Nohr and Sara Thygesen from Denmark 21-9, 22-20. The Indians beat from 17 to 20, saved three set points, to beat their rivals in the second game.

Pranaav Jerry Chopra and Sikki Reddy defeated Jakub Bitman and Alzbeta Basova of the Czech Republic 21-17, 21-15. They have a tough match against Indonesians Hafiz Faizal and Gloria Emanuelle Widjaja.

Silver medalists from the Russian Open Rohan Kapoor and Kuhoo Garg, who traveled from Vladivastock after Sunday's final, outclbaded Toby Ng and Rachel Honderich, of Canada, 21-9, 21 -6. They face Adbads – Chris and Gabrielle – in the next round.

Surabh Sharma and Anoushka Parikh struggled against Nigerians Enejoh Abah and Peace Orji 21-13, 21-12.

Meanwhile, leading Indian commuters Kidambi Srikanth and Saina Nehwal will appear in court on Tuesday.
