'Happy as Lazzaro'

The Italian writer-director Alice Rohrwacher ("The Wonders") makes films that straddle genres and defy easy description, but her twisty " Happy as Lazzaro "was one of the most beloved competition entries for this year, winning the award for best screenplay. Set in a rural village called Inviolata, the film is about an unlikely friendship between a pure-hearted peasant and a nobleman who asks him to help orchestrate his own kidnapping. There is also the machinations of Marchesa Alfonsina de Luna (Nicoletta Braschi), known as the queen of cigarettes. It sounds baffling, but Rohrwacher's magic realism has its own internal logic.

This stylized documentary series of nine Los Angeles musicians as they try to make it in the business, building up a big showcase at a nightclub. While "Westside" breaks down their individual stories and talents, its approach is more about advocacy and promotion than fly-on-the-wall truth. There are music videos and performances of original songs, on top of a "Real World" -like mingling of talented strangers. One of them says, wryly, "This was an expedited process of growth."

The Kominsky Method

Chuck Lorre , sitcom comedy ("The Big Bang Theory"), the comedian of the comedy and the comedy series "Disjointed," but it was canceled after a two-part , 20-episode episode. Now Lorre is taking another shot with "The Kominsky Method," luring Michael Douglas to television to play an ounce-revered actor and Alan Arkin, who plays his agent and friend. Douglas's character sounds too close for comfort to Henry Winkler's on "Barry," but "The Kominsky Method" brings Douglas back to his roots on the small screen, where he made a name for himself on the 1970s procedural "The Streets of San Francisco.

'Narcos: Mexico'

The success of its crime drama "Narcos" has created an identity problem for Netflix. For two seasons, it was a show about the life and death of Pablo Escobar, the Columbian drug trafficker who became a cocaine billionaire. The third season followed by the Cali Cartel, which directly benefited from Escobar's death. Now "Narcos: Mexico," from the series creators, Carlo Bernard and Doug Miro, based on the Guiding Principles of a New Country and an entirely new cast of characters, following the Guadalajara Cartel and the efforts of a DEA agent (Michael Peña) to stop it.
