PARIS (AP) – Unleashed by the badbadination of an archduke, the First World War gradually entangled more and more countries, killing millions of soldiers and civilians and touching multiple continents.

As the world marks the 100th anniversary of the end of the fighting, here is a glimpse of the key moments of the First World War:

1914

June 28: a Serbian teenager, Gavrilo Princip, badbadinates the Austrian archduke Franz Ferdinand

July 28: Austria-Hungary declares war on Serbia

1: Germany declares war on Russia

Aug. 3: Germany declares war on France

Aug. 4: Germany invades Belgium; Britain declares war on Germany

November: the beginning of the trench war

1915

February: The German submarine campaign marks the first major use of submarines in the war

April: Allied troops land in Gallipoli, Turkey, a decisive moment for the Australian and New Zealand
