NEWARK – The number of reported cases of polio-like affection called acute flaccid myelitis (AM) has increased in the United States, officials said Wednesday.
The CDC announced the presence of 116 confirmed cases of AD in 31 states. six of which are in New Jersey.
AFM is a rare condition that affects a person's nervous system, particularly the spinal cord. AFM or neurological conditions like this have a variety of causes such as viruses, environmental toxins and genetic disorders. According to the CDC, it mainly affects children.
The US Department of Health has stated that it has no indication that these cases are related to each other or to other states.
"The Department has joined the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is making considerable efforts to strengthen the surveillance of acute acute myelitis, asking clinicians to voluntarily report suspected cases," said the spokesperson. from the Department of Health, Dawn Thomas. "We asked them to remain alert to suspected MFA cases and report them to the ministry, we have worked with health care providers who have reported suspected cases to us and are working closely with the CDC to investigate this information. "
Thomas's surveillance showed that MFA cases generally peaked in September and October.
The CDC stated that patients' symptoms were very similar to the complications of infection with certain viruses, including polioviruses, non-polio enteroviruses, adenoviruses and West Nile virus. They include the sudden onset of weakness of the arms or legs, as well as the loss of muscle tone and reflexes.
