Akhil Akkineni and Nidhhi Agerwal-starrer Mr. Majnu wants to watch the Indian cricket team beat on a difficult pitch on the fifth day of a test match. At first, it looks like an easy pursuit. However, the star drummer wants to be careful and stay there until the end because things have gone wrong in the past. The film revolves around Vicky (Akhil), who is very popular with women at her college in the UK. One day, while traveling to India, he meets Nikki (Nidhhi) and tries to flirt with her. However, things do not start on a good note between the two. Much later, Nikki, who knows Vicky's true nature, falls in love with him. The rest of the story is about how Vicky handles the situation.
From the beginning, director and writer Venky Atluri felt an incessant feeling of making his impressive debut with Tholiprema in 2018. tried to play too safe this time. The stakes of the love story are weak, and at no time do we feel the burning desire that is essential to a love story. The only empathy you have is Nikky, who is obviously heartbroken. It's his emotion that drives most of the first half of the story, and some of the sequences between the two characters have an impact. However, as the narrative moves to Vicky's perspective, the film becomes more and more repetitive. There is a major sense of already seen as the story unfolds and, on the whole, Mr. Majnu do not feel interesting enough for you to root the characters. Even Nikki's description becomes latent after a point, because all the attention is focused on allowing Vicky to find his reason.
Akhil, who played the lead role, is presented from the beginning as a playboy. Women instantly fall in love with him and he only needs a "wink". This is probably the only character we have about him during most of the first act of the film. Venky Atluri takes a little too long to establish the fact that Vicky loves his family and wants to follow in his father's footsteps. He respects his uncle even when he constantly criticizes Vicky for not focusing his studies on anything. Some of the best sequences in the film, which arouse some emotion, concern Akhil's family. One of these scenes revolves around how he stands up for his family when his uncle faces big problems. In another case, Akhil is caught in the act by the whole family to know what is happening in his love life. Despite these good times, the pursuit until the end, so to speak, is reduced to mere seconds in the second half, and there is little movement that makes you jump for joy.
M. Majnu is a product of design and his underlying emotion does not feel organic enough, even when Venky changes the perspective of his main characters. We sincerely thank George C Williams, director of photography, for turning the film into a beautiful, stop-motion portrait. The only magic that occurs in the film takes place at the magic hour of the day. Thaman's music has the heavy hangover of its tunes of the past. However, they marry well with the scenario.
You would have seen a film like Mr. Majnu or something similar in the past. The question here is not whether it is different from other movies of the genre. This is not really the purpose of the film because it tells you the same story. Here he asks a simple question – What does it mean to be in love? In Mr. Majnu, the main character realizes that it is above all a matter of loving someone as he wants, even if it means changing oneself self. And more importantly, love means that you have to lie because you do not want to hurt anyone. The film, more or less, follows the same moral – it does not hurt anyone because it believes in a clbadic sports adage – "The best defense is a good offense".
