New Delhi: The Ministry of Home Affairs on Friday issued a press release announcing the Padma Awards for 2019. The Padma Award – one of the most prestigious civilian awards in the country, awarded in three categories, namely, Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan and Padma Shri. The prizes are awarded in various disciplines / fields of activity, such as art, social work, public affairs, science and engineering, commerce and industry, medicine, literature and education, sports, public service, etc.
Padma Vibhushan is Reward for Outstanding and Distinguished Service, Padma Bhushan for High Distinguished Service and Padma Shri for Distinguished Service in all fields. The awards are awarded each year on the occasion of Republic Day.
These awards are given by the President of India at ceremonies held in Rashtrapati Bhavan, usually every year around March / April. This year, the Indian president has approved the offer of 112 Padma awards, including a duet affair (in a duet affair, the award counts for one). The list includes 4 Padma Vibhushan, 14 Padma Bhushan and 94 Padma Shri Awards. 21 of the winners are women and the list also includes 11 categories in the Foreign / NRI / PIO / OIC category, 3 posthumous laureates and one transgender person.
