Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Amrita Rao, Thackeray is a biographical political drama based on the life of Shiv Sena supremo, late Bal Thackeray. While Manikarnika is a period film that traces the life story of Rani Laxmibai and his fight against the British. The film features Kangana Ranaut, Ankita Lokhande, Danny Denzongappa and Suresh Oberoi.
Although both films opened to decent criticism, Kangana Manikarnika defeated Nawazuddin's film on the first day at the box office.

Thackeray was broadcast on about 2,000 screens and was featured in 16 country simultaneously, while, Manikarnika locked in 2,900 screens. It has been published in 50 countries and in three languages: Hindi, Tamil and Telugu. According to badysts of the film trade, the two films of the state of Maharashtra will compete side by side, especially with the Marathi and Hindi version of Thackeray .
