Director Sanjay Leela Bhansali first asked Shah Rukh Khan to play the role of Maharawal Ratan Singh – the character of Shahid Kapoor for the sole purpose of rejecting him. The report further indicates that Shah Rukh refused the role because he thought the film was mainly turned towards Rani Padmini and Khilji. After learning this, Bhansali offered SRK the role of Khilji – played by Ranveer
but SRK refused to badume the role because he was already facing negative reactions at the time with his film Raees . Khilji would only make things worse for him since it was a purely negative character. That's how Ranveer got the role, says the report.
