Q. Do you think the time has come to make a comeback on the big screen?

With the digital space and exposure to foreign content, I think the public has just woken up, and maybe that's why we do not necessarily see the "Khan" phenomenon when it comes to celluloid . Q. Content has become king, but do you think television needs to improve its game?
The content has always been there, but the audience and even the filmmakers have become brave. I'm part of a series like Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi that is unbeatable for a decade or so. We now see shows like Naagin being accepted because they have something new to offer. Have you seen the VFX of this show? Naag (snake) is more like a worm.
If you see the kind of success that Badhaai Ho knows, will you believe if I tell you that the same idea was suggested for television about twenty years ago? At this point, we made fun of. I was there when the narration was going on. To a certain extent, Marathi films have always challenged themselves and discussed concepts that were taboo at the time and are becoming a trend in Bollywood.
On TV, if you bring a screenplay to the creators, they will say "kuch alag lao" (bring something different). Their request is always the same. Sometimes the subject is accepted and forgotten. I certainly want to see a change in the content on television, but as an actor, I have limitations.
Q. You became famous after playing Daadi in Comedy Nights with Kapil and The Kapil Sharma Show. Do you think this has limited your opportunities somewhere?
They (channel producers) have a search parameter. I am often asked why I only do female characters on television. I must let you know that this is not what I am doing by choice and that is why the Amavas movie is special because it reminds people that I am able to do everything. It's a shout: "Hello, mujhe aata hai (I can do it.) Ab aisa hogaya hai ki mujhe batana padta hai ki main mard hoon. (Now, I have to remind people that I am a man.) I am extremely grateful to Mr. Bhushan and Mr. Sachin. I swear, if they want me to be a ghost at the next installment, I'm ready.
Everyone needs variety. I do not get bored, but I'm tired. No matter what I do, I'm wearing the same clothes, similar characters. The research team has shown me figures saying that people want to see me do only female characters. Now, I really want to know who these people are?
Q. So you mean breaking the string is difficult on television?
As soon as your character becomes your identity, know that you are stuck and that the road ahead is going to be harder.
