Gully Boy surfs the wave of good publicity thanks to his strong script, well-defined characters and solid performance. While Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt greatly appreciate their turn in the film, actor Vijay Varma, Ranveer's friend, Moeen in Gully Boy, also drew people's attention.

The actor is seen in the role of a drug trafficker and a car thief, who will do everything in his power to survive in the big and the bad world. In an exclusive interview with HT, the actor explained how Zoya is the Dhoni of cinema and what is the most special quality of Ranveer. Extracts:

Do you know how to get into a locked car now?

Not really (laughs).

You play a drug dealer named Moeen, who also shares his car lifting skills with the character of Ranveer Murad.

I think it's a very enterprising type who knows how to make money. He tries various methods to survive because he belongs to a place where survival is the key. He will take all the steps to survive and have the life that he wants. He has his own understanding of how things work in his ecosystem, the way he helps children in his own way.

The film also talks about your friendship with Ranveer. Were you also good friends on the sets?

We got together during the workshop where we met for the first time. We broke the ice playing with the kids, listening to music, talking about pets. He helped shape Moeen's character directly by giving me some key suggestions on how we could make this character work. There was a lot to do between us.

Ranveer's commitment to the stage is so strong that I had to improve my game. He's an incredible co-actor.

What were Ranveer's suggestions?

He told me how Moeen is king in his own world as he has money and weed. He governs the small domain to which he belongs. He explained how Moeen could make a joke but that no one could do a joke with him. Zoya did not treat these characters as typical Bollywood friends. They have their own stories.

Have you chosen a feature of his style of work?

Ranveer has a very high quality. We were doing a scene where he pushes me. So we took a shot from the other side, then a close shot, then a few more shots over and over again. So I just asked, do I take the scene halfway? He said, let's start from the beginning. I said, why waste energy to do everything from the beginning. He said to me, "What will you do with this energy, will you bring it home? Use this energy for shooting. He made sure I was doing the whole thing. He knows how it will help the film.

What's the difference between working with Zoya Akhtar?

She is very charming, attentive and also very democratic. She accepts a lot of suggestions and lets others make suggestions to improve her storyline. She's not a control freak. She likes to see what we do and if she likes it, she suggests what we can keep and remove. Instead of doing the performance, she is shaping it.

She is very cool and never gets angry. I have never seen her frown or feel restless. She is like the Dhoni of cinema.

Gully Boy received a wonderful response. How is life after the release of the film?

I am still immersed in excitement. I take advantage of all the attention I receive right now. It's a very good feeling. Whether friends, family members or former clbadmates, they call me constantly. My phone has become a hot tower right now.
