German fashion designer Karl Lagerfeld, artistic director of Chanel and icon of the fashion sector in the world for more than half a century, has died, said Tuesday a source at the French fashion house. He was 85 years old.
Lagerfeld, immediately recognizable in his black suits, white hair in ponytails and sunglbades, was best known for his badociation with Chanel, but he did deliver collections for LVMH's Fendi and his own eponymous brand.
Lagerfeld's health worsened after missing Chanel's parade in Paris in January.
"We lost a creative genius that helped make Paris the fashion capital of the world and Fendi is one of the most innovative Italian homes," said the president of LVMH. The executive director, Bernard Arnault, said in a statement
"We owe him a lot: his taste and talent are the most outstanding I've ever known."

Born in Hamburg in 1933, Lagerfeld made his debut with designer Pierre Balmain as an apprentice before then moving on to Patou and Chloé's home. Italian brand Fendi. He got the status of rock star after his arrival at Chanel in 1983.
